Day 3 & 4 - Where should the island go?

On Day 3, they finished up the rough in of the electrical, plumbing and framing. We were scheduled to have an inspector come by on Day 4 to check the plumbing. The electrical inspection has been moved to Monday Day 5, meaning that there won't be much activity on Day 4. But, that gives us some time to play around with different island configurations. Normally these plans probably would have been done before the project began, but we just couldn't commit to a certain design without seeing the space with all the walls down. Before the walls came down, there was no way we even thought it was possible to have an island in the kitchen. But now that they are gone, we are so excited that we have plenty of space. All that's left it to figure out the best placement....

Luckily, out contractor, Karen, had some extra saw horses and a piece of masonite cut to the size of the island (60 X 39) for us to use. Meaning, we could move these around, bring in some chairs, and "live" in the space for a night before the final decision had to be made. After re-arranging the island 6 times, going back and forth between a couple of layouts, we still couldn't decide, so we took a picture, and went to bed to sleep on it.

The next morning was Friday, Day 4 and we made the final decision that it would stay just as we left it the night before, and we are both very happy with the decision! I can't wait until it is permanent! Karen stuck around most of the day waiting on the inspector to show up, and called to let us know that it passed.

Since there aren't any other updates from Day 4, I thought I would also post a couple inspiration pics for the pantry that I love.

Love the wrap around shelves and the extra counter space for hiding things behind closed doors!

Love this quarterfoil design on the pantry walls and actually the whole pantry makeover that House of Smith's posted about is worth a read. I would smile every time I opened this pantry!

Our pantry will be big, but to make the best use of the space we decided that we will have to use bi-fold doors. Ugh....I hate those things.....until I saw this photo below on Funky Junk Interiors. I completely changed my mind when I realized it was possible to get flush bi-fold doors and add some molding to make it look like a piece of furniture! And since the flush bi-fold doors are super cheap, I was sold!! You will have to take a closer look to see what I am talking about, that is how hidden they are! Love it!!

Can't wait to show you what next week brings! Hope you had a great weekend!

Wow, what a huge change! I can't believe how different it looks already. I really like how the island is placed and can't wait to see how the pantry turns out in the end!
